U.S. intelligence reports from the first hours after the attacks suggested they were carried out by militants tied to al Qaeda’s North African affiliate and local groups sympathetic to al Qaeda.
But CIA officials, in “talking points” developed for use by public officials, including Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, described the attacks differently.
The Senate report criticizes the CIA talking points for deleting a reference to al Qaeda and changing the word “attacks” to “demonstrations.” The report says the administration has yet to provide a timeline for the development of the talking points. (Wall Street Journal, Posted 31 Dec 12)
